I carpool with a neighbor so every other morning I walk Emily and Eliana out to the front yard and wait for my neighbor to drive up. Then I help the girls get into the car and walk back into the house. It usually takes two or three minutes depending on how long we have to wait for their car to drive up.
Sarah had woken up this morning before the girls left for school. I didn't want to leave her for too long so I waited until my neighbor drove up. Sarah was sitting on the couch and I told her I would be right back. I walked outside with Emily and Eliana and got them into the car. Since we didn't have to wait, it took about a minute. I turn the knob to go inside and realize that the door is LOCKED.
Sarah has NEVER locked the door before. I didn't realize that she knew how to lock it. The knob turns fine, but the deadbolt is locked. I'm standing outside in freezing weather with no coat, no phone, and no keys.
I start knocking on the door, calling Sarah's name. She comes to the door and tries to open it with the knob. I'm trying to figure out how to get a 2-year-old to understand the word "deadbolt". I kept calling it the "top lock", but she kept turning the knob. After a couple of tries, she walks away.
I'm still standing there, calling her name, begging her to open the door. She sounds like she is in the living room and she keeps saying, "Just a minute!" I am picturing her getting into something like markers and writing all over herself as fast as she can thinking that this is the prime opportunity to get into trouble while I can't get in to spoil her fun.
After 15 minutes (I checked the clock when I got in), she finally came back over and got the deadbolt unlocked for me to come in. She didn't have any writing on her so I'm not sure what she was doing, but I was so glad that she had figured out how to let me in, I didn't think much on what she had been doing. Everything looked in order. The main thing on my to-do list today is to give my neighbor a spare key. I also plan on walking out each morning with my phone and my keys in hand just in case.
