I starting panicking because 1) I had no idea what a boll weevil looked like and 2) I don't remember the last time I picked up a needle and sewed something. Emily and I looked up pictures of boll weevils online. We read that they can be black, brownish-red or gray. We came up with a plan on how to make a boll weevil costume. We picked black since that was the easiest color to find tights and a leotard in. Next, we went to Joann's Fabric Store. We had never been in there and Emily kept saying how much she loved that place.
My sewing machine has been in storage for the past 6 years so I sewed the beetle back and nose by hand. Here's the finished product so far (You can click on the picture to see an enlarged version.):

After looking at these, I see that the antennas on the nose are bent unevenly and the back may need to be more over the shoulders. I thought about pinning the back to the leotard up by her shoulders so that it won't slide down. She is also going to have to speak up in order to be heard with a nose falling down in front of her mouth. She's trying to figure out how she is going to eat the cotton candy without getting it all over the underside of the nose. Overall though, she is pleased with the way the costume turned out. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it after the play...
